Fifth grade students are looking to artists, both past and present, who create expressive self-portraits with various media. Beginning with an informal critique, students are finding elements of art that contribute to the meaning or identity of a self-portrait. Then, exploring different media used to make an image we are discussing objects used as metaphors. Finally, students are looking at themselves as subjects to create a series of self-portraits with mixed media to best express the facets of their unique personality.
